Went back to London after a few days, went to Wembley for the first time for the England/Switzerland game (Capello’s first match). Saw the sights…the usual touristy stuff! But then one day…

My boyfriend wanted to venture off somewhere, but I wanted to go to Wimbledon (I’m a HUGE tennis fan), so for the afternoon, he and I parted ways. I took the District line towards Wimbledon and took a pit stop to Stamford Bridge to check out the Chelsea Megastore. They had a sale so I got myself a Ballack home jersey (finally!), which I was going to wear at the Chelsea/Liverpool game that weekend. I then continued to Wimbledon, and once I got there, I took a tour of the famous tennis place. It’s a beautiful walk between the tube station and Wimbledon, so on my way back, I stopped in all these stores and browsed. I got thirsty so I went to this coffee shop off the main road, in a residential neighborhood. While I was deciding what to order, I was trying to juggle everything I had (souvenirs from The Bridge and the Wimbledon store, as well as my big ass purse), I ended up dropping everything. I started picking up everything when someone behind me bends down and helps me pick it up. I said “thank you” and looked up and IT WAS MICHAEL BALLACK! I was like “oh my god. I think you’re Michael Ballack.” He just smiled said “you are correct” and continued handing me my things. Me being the dork that I am, I was still wearing my Wimbledon tour sticker so he said “you must be a tennis fan” and I said “yes, but I am an even bigger football fan!” That’s when he said “You have great taste in football!” and pointed to my Chelsea megastore bag, and I responded “I am a HUGE fan of yours!” and I took out my newly-printed Ballack jersey! He laughed and said “Good choice! Thank you!” I can’t believe I was in the mindset, but I said “Can I buy you your coffee?” and he replied “oh, no…no, thank you…let me buy something for my big fan!” so he bought me my hot chocolate!

I thought that was it, but as we were gathering our drinks, he said “I can tell by your accent you are not from here, where are you from?” So I proceeded to tell him I was from the United States, near the New York region, and how I was such a big fan of him and Chelsea, I traveled all the way to Los Angeles last summer, only to find out he didn’t travel with the team because of his injury. He said “I can tell you have lots of passion for the sport if you traveled to both Los Angeles and out of the country to support your team”. Mind you…me and him were sitting at a table by now and there was NO ONE in the café since it was in the middle of the weekday, so I took advantage of the opportunity to chat. I asked him how he liked living in London and how his family was adjusting. He told me the family is really enjoying their time, his boys are speaking both English and German and adjusting well (they were at a museum with their mum, and he had gotten back from training shortly before I ran into him). Our conversation lasted a good 20 minutes or so (he was done with his drink, and so was I, but I didn’t want to throw the cup away so I pretended I was still drinking!) and we talked about the upcoming game on Saturday and just English stuff (food mostly). He then asked me what I did or if I was a student, so I explained to him how I graduated recently from college and now works for ESPN as an associate producer. I mentioned how Sheva came to ESPN right before the World Cup to shoot a commercial, and I told him how GREAT it would be if he came over and did the same, as these commercials are really popular for our networks. He said “I’ve only been to New York a few times, I’d love to go back sometime soon”. That’s when I said that the actual ESPN studios are in the middle of nowhere, two hours from NYC (aka, my home state, Connecticut!), but it would be an absolute honour, especially for ESPN International, if we could get him to come over, perhaps after “Germany wins Euros this year” I suggested!, and he laughed and said “that would be great! You could be my tour guide” and I said “ABSOLUTELY”.

Mind you, I’m absolutely freaking out inside, but I was so amazed with how cool I was acting…because had I been acting the way I was feeling inside, I wouldn’t have been able to coherently tell him about the charity stuff ESPN likes to do for different athletes, and I somehow started to plug how great and honoured ESPN would be if we worked with him as the ambassador for the UN on the AIDS awareness campaign. That’s when he did the unthinkable; HE GAVE ME HIS AGENT’S NUMBER. He said “I’d love to be involved with something like that, especially with a global sports network on such an important cause. Have someone contact my agent”. I was thinking “Uh…I’m not sure who at this moment…but OKAY!” I gave him my business card (not that he’d do anything with it), and he said “thank you”, put it in his pocket and smiled.

That was it for our conversation! I told him I was going to his game on Saturday, and will be sitting 6 rows from the pitch in the West End lower. He said “good seats!” I thanked him again for the drink and for TOTALLY making my dream come true, and he said “thank you for all of your support, I love all of my fans” (I took that as him saying he loved me ) and that was it! I didn’t have a camera with me, so no pictures, but we had such a great conversation that I didn’t feel the need to ask him for an autograph. I did, however, shake his hand again and acting like a fan[girl], shyly asked for a hug, which he obliged! My face turned Liverpool red but I did NOT give a hoot at that moment.

The Chelsea/Liverpool game was a dud, 0-0 with Michael ALMOST scoring at the end. I fulfilled one dream…seeing Michael play and even meeting him, but I didn’t get to see Xabi play (he was suspended for Sunderland, and didn’t play at The Bridge either…matchday programme said he was “suspended”…ODD). NEXT TIME!
